METAPHORICAL CHAINS, That is

60 notes

Anonymous asked: Jesus. If you even took a single class on Eastern studies, you would know that bindis being worn by non-south asians isn't cultural appropriation.

srushtinator:

So let me get this straight.

A person who took an “eastern studies class” (extremely vague, I’m guessing it’s about the ENTIRE east, in ONE class) knows more about MY culture than me? Me, being a person who was born into a culture and surrounded by it on a daily basis?

I’m gonna go ahead and guess you’re not South Asian.

Yet here you are, a non-South Asian, telling someone who IS a South Asian that they know more about their culture than they do.

Seriously, fuck off.

Speaking as a Desi, I don’t understand this mentality. White people picking up pieces of Desi culture is indicative that we are finally being integrated into the melting pot. How is this a bad thing?

If you identify as Communist, yet you

  • are homophobic
  • are transphobic
  • are racist
  • are sexist
  • are ableist
  • talk over oppressed peoples
  • don’t believe in oppressor vs. oppressed

then get the fuck out of here because you are the worst Communist ever. You literally cannot be Communist with prejudice. You literally cannot be Communist and not acknowledge oppression, the main point of Conflict Theory.

Stop.

Every major Communist leader ever was pretty much all of these things.

http://estelcontar.tumblr.com/post/79536713816/quoting-the-dictionary-in-order-to-argue-that

estelcontar:

Quoting the dictionary in order to argue that racism includes prejudice against white people and sexism includes prejudice again men does not work. All it does is basically ignore and exclude an entire history of race and sex literature, and ignore the power structures in place in our society.

1. All current editors of Oxford and Mariam-Webster are women.
and have been for the past 30-ish years. The dictionary gets updated, the people who make it recognize that connotations change, they’re not imbeciles

2. “Racism” and “Sexism” were terms invented by progressives in the 50’s-60’s era. Ya know, back when all the post-modernist movements started. Meaning their original context of use was structural criticism. Again, the dictionary is designed to reflect connotation of use, so yeah the definitions we give these words were originally meant to be used in the same way modern progressives use em.

3. I’m not arguing that word connotations don’t change. What you fail to grasp is that word changes are oftentimes used to push specific political agendas (ie pro-choice, pro-life etc.) My problem with the particular argument made is that the Liberal SJW connotation of the words sexism and racism are presented as if they’re an unbiased definition of the words. Pro-tip: they aren’t, they’re agendicized as all hell. I think the vast majority of people outside of Tumblr recognize that you can be racist/sexist against any group of people. These particular definitions openly encourage hate towards white people and men, which is a hell of a bias.

4. ” Traditionally gender roles are based on the idea that women are inherently inferior/males are superior.” This is such bullshit. Traditional gender roles are built on the idea that men and women are better at different things. The modern interpretation of this is that these roles assumed women are inferior because of how materialistic our society has become, and the death of the nuclear family. Everything is about the $, all anyone cares about anymore is acquiring things (that they probably don’t need). Because of this, our society today only looks on the traditional man’s role as being favorable (because he was the one who got the $s). All of the feminist advocacy today is about allowing women to take on roles men traditionally held. Gender roles evolved because we didn’t have modern conveniences back in the day, to get a household running you needed proper division of labor. Working a plow or running a forge took serious muscle power, makes more sense for the gender which is naturally stronger to do that shit. Working manual labor for 40+ hours a week sucks. Most middle-class Westerners today (aka 90% of Tumblr) probably don’t realize this.

Basically, there’s no implied inferiority, this is a connotation which we have added in the modern day because we have cast off notions like the value of the family in place of materialism and wealth acquisition. The only implied superiority is that men are superior at working shitty jobs. Unfortunately, our society today has made that shitty job their entire life, hence the assumed modern inferiority complex.

5. The “power structures” mindset is Marxist as all hell. They’re predicated on this notion that life would be one big utopia for everyone if it wasn’t for just this one specific set of people who somehow fucked everyone over (The bourgeoisie for Economic Marxism, the “Culturally Privileged” [White dudes] for the Cultural variant). This is all populist bullshit based on the notion that the one who believes this shit isn’t responsible for the problems in their life, its someone else’s fault. I would go into more detail but I know you won’t believe me regardless of how much sense my argument makes so…

On an unrelated note, stop being so fucking depressed dude. By which I mean stop wallowing in it. I used to think pretty similarly to the way you do now back when I was depressed as fuck, even on the political/post-modernist crap. I mean I think you saw some of the fucking substance abuse problems I had, shit was bad. Power structures and the white man aren’t ruining your life, you and your lack of real self-awareness are the one responsible. And don’t tell me that you aren’t personally invested in your post-modernist viewpoint, the basis of post-modernism comes the notion of viewpoints being subjective, meaning that it is inherently a personal and emotional thing.

Get off the anti-depressants, they make everything worse. They only treat symptoms, not the cause. That cause is not society, it’s something(s) buried in your subconscious. Speaking 100% from personal experience. Look up transcendental meditation, just ignore all the New Age bullshit, do that 30 minutes minimum every day, I guarantee your life will take an upswing. Worked for me, I’ve been told by literally everyone that I “have a completely different aura about me now.” So yeah.

Seriously, Richard. You’re an intelligent, educated man of science. It would take so little for you to pull your head out of your ass.
Prejudice against white people can be real, but it’s not racism. Prejudice against men can be real, but it’s not sexism. Racism and sexism include elements of systemic or institutionalized oppression, and the dominant cultural group is, by definition, not oppressed.
The concepts of cultural hegemony and systemic oppression really aren’t all that complicated, but they do require that you acknowledge the existence of both white and male privilege without being sarcastic.
It’s not that big a deal to wrap your head around these ideas, and given your sharp mind, I’m hopeful that one day you’ll have a legitimate epiphany about this stuff and stop acting like such a smug prick.

From Merriam-Webster Dictionary (1st Listed Definition Used):
Racism: “poor treatment of or violence against people because of their race”
Sexism: “prejudice or discrimination based on sex; especially : unfair treatment of women” Note the use of the word “especially” making it inclusive of sexism against men, even if it isn’t the focal point.
Muh Semantics. Cultural Marxism up in dis bitch.
Also posting a passive-aggressive follow-up on a place the guy you’re arguing with will never see and thus be able to respond to. Lmao Tumblr circlejerkery ftw.

WHY WOULD YOU BE ANTI SOCIAL JUSTICE OH MY GOD

Because you are actually intelligent and educated

i dont understand why you would be against injustice in our society do you like problematic behavior because thats basically…

i agree i think a lot of people on tumblr make issues like what you stated about themselves instead of helping the actual cause its just like how you shouldnt get a cookie for being a lgbtq ally

i can see what your saying considering some users are very hypocritical and dont actually go out to help the cause because really what is making a post on tumblr going to do?? just about everyone on here knows these issues so why not spread it to people who DONT know

i dont think anti social justice is the right term though because it seems like you care a lot and thats great i just dont want people on here to have social justice ruined for them because a few more than a few  people are portraying incorrectly

I’d agree with the terminology thing, but unfortunately that’s the vernacular being used today. So there really isn’t any way around it. Because the term social justice is used in this context, the natural opposing term is anti-social justice. No one is “anti-justice,” the idea is just that the things being cited are not actual instances of injustice so much as (typically white identity-confused) people trying to create issues which don’t really exist. All this does is make things worse as in many cases, theres plenty of misinformation being spread (See the Ugandan response to Kony 2012. The actual goverment there has been far worse than Kony, who has pretty much been in hiding this whole time, for this past decade). Spreading this stuff is dangerous because A. Cultural effects and B. It allows people to feel that they are doing something to positively benefit the world, thus making them not try to figure out where the actual instances of injustice are.

Basically, the collective culture has the wrong idea of what social justice actually is, hence the use of the phrase anti-social justice to oppose. Gotta work within the confines of our present vernacular, or else the whole thing is pointlessly confusing and devolves into a debate of semantics, instead of looking at the actual arguments made.
